There must be few situations more immersive than front line aid workers in NGOs working in poverty striken and dangerous parts of the world. But what about desk bound people in Aid giving organisations like the World Bank? The report by Renick et al (2004) 'Learning from poor people's experiences: immersions' provides a useful synthesis of the thinking and concepts underlying the approach to the education of professionals working in aid agencies.

It describes: the types and purposes of immersions

  • practical experiences with immersion design
  • logistical organisation and the host community
  • the rationale and impact of immersions
  • and identifies the conditions for making immersion a normal, regular and expected activity for professionals working in this field.
