Context/Situation/Challenge
Reading a book which introduces me to a new subject or experience is an immersive experience for me. I need the stimulation/challenge, to learn new ‘stuff’, to link disparate ideas, and to create a greater understanding of people and the world   I become immersed in music too, but can’t read music or play an instrument; this is an analytical and appreciative experience rather than just an emotional one, but I don’t have the words to describe it.

Characteristics of the situation that engaged me in an immersive way
·It’s informal; it’s a leisure activity and I chose where/when it happens
·It’s well written, so it’s enjoyable as well as stimulating – the author is enthusiastic about their subject
·I can spend as long as I like reading
·It may have no relevance to anything I’m involved in or need to know, but there will be times when either the specific  knowledge or understanding of something is usually unconsciously retrieved at a relevant time.

How I was changed (or what and how I learned)
·Not exactly eureka moments, more ah, hah moments as something falls into place, links with something else or I understand more about a situation or experience

Description of the immersive experience

Principles and lessons to be drawn
·The experience should be designed by someone who can inspire learners
·The designer needs to recapture what made the subject immersive for them
·The idea of an immersive experience can be off putting/frightening for some maybe? An immersive learning experience means letting go, you can’t “cling to the sides
of the pool” – how do you prepare people for such an experience?
·Can you describe the benefits?
·Do the outcomes have to be SMART? Can they be ephemeral?

Lessons on the personal level
·Be curious
·Be open to new experiences and knowledge
·Open the book randomly and start reading where it catches your eye; this way you don’t follow the author’s chosen path, but start to formulate knowledge and ideas
 for yourself
·Don’t think you have to write an essay on it afterwards, rather read knowing that it will become part of your tacit knowledge
·Reading is a solitary experience, if there is someone you can share the experience with it is enriching for both of you
