Ecuador: Learning to Belong


 


I remember the first time I felt the fear. Cruising at 10,000 feet, I had contentedly frittered away the last 10 hours with a mix of sleep, chocolate brazil nuts and a Spanish phrase book. I felt as if I were going on holiday. Then the announcement came. ‘Ladies and gentlemen,’ said the captain in a confident home counties accent, ‘we will shortly be arriving in Quito...’ My stomach did an involuntary twirl as I took in the words. Quito – my home for the foreseeable future.

I had been happy in my job as the deputy editor of a travel magazine in London, where I had worked since graduating two years before. But it was time for a change, and this looked enticing. I emailed the company director my CV, and he called me straight back and asked me to come into the office for an interview. Everyone has a story to tell. All over Wales, people are making Digital Stories about real-life experiences and each story is as individual as the person who made it. Each Digital Story is made by the storyteller themself, using his or her own photos, words and voice.
Assessing Complex Stories
At the workshop on Digital Storytelling at the University of Gloucester we were shown some interesting examples of stories. The process was reasonably open, and some of the results were facinating, and quite unexpected. This was both an opportunity (for innovation and creativity) and a problem (within apre-set outcomes-based assessment system).
However, if we approach assessment within complexity theory, we can make the assessment as open as the story process, and still achieve rigorous assessment, based on recorded evidence.Hereare some thoughts on how thiscan be done.

Your senses react at their full to pain and your mind is a genius at play just when it senses danger. You have known yourself better not through what you see but by what you understand, and you understand everything better through the viewer that shapes you. Immersion and diving both endless travels on familiar ground, drowning as it seems was never a matter solved beforehand, as to after it has become too late.Creativethoughts by Sorrentaimage by Josh Sommers.
